Silver Star

William Stafford wrote this wonderful poem. Today, as I wondered what I should post, I came across it. It is weird in a way, but I am rarely concerned with what people think about me. More accurately, I do not place much emphasis in quantity. I prefer quality in my relationships, people who think of me for the right reasons. They care and their words are true.

People are aware I am leaving the profession. It is to hear words of gratitude from students and their families, including former students. I do not hear the whole world say, “Good job”, but I hear the right part of the world saying it.

To be a mountain you have to climb alone

and accept all that rain and snow. You have to look

far away when evening comes. If a forest

grows, you care; you stand there leaning against

the wind, waiting for someone with faith enough

to ask you to move. Great stones will tumble

against each other and gouge your sides. A storm

will live somewhere in your canyons hoarding its lightning.

If you are lucky, people will give you a dignified

name and bring crowds to admire how sturdy you are,

how long you can hold still for the camera. And some time,

they say, if you last long enough you will hear God;

a voice will roll down from the sky and all your patience

will be rewarded. The whole world will hear it: “Well done.”

Barriers to love

This is a beautiful quote from Rumi. What barriers have I built that prevent love from showing up? What can I do to take the barriers down?

12 Steps To Happness

This is a great graphic that needs to be shared many times. It summarizes many of the wisdom traditions of the world into 12 steps. It does not make them easier to achieve, but it makes them visible and touchable. Thank you Eddie Two Hawks.

The Child in Me

What if I could just lay outside with grass as my green carpet and the sky replete with clouds as my ceiling? We leave childhood behind so easily?

I lay on green carpet shaggy–

Enrobed in leaves’ greenery;

Silent words breezily whispered–

Bluest blue ceiling revealed;

Cotton batten shapes dance–

Oh, just for me this day!

Night arrives–

The sky wrapped in ebony–

Distant neon signs wink–

Moon’s maternal smile–

Each welcomes–

Just me, this night!

A child’s heart, a child’s mind;

Paints precious images–

Hold close;

Do not let them fade–

Close eyes:

Priceless memories, just for me!

clouds open the heart to heaven

Mimi at Waiting for the Karma Truck re-blogged this beautiful post from Make Believe Boutique. It is a wonderful story about the things we tend to overlook in life. The Rumi quote is a great opening. Have an extraordinary day. Enjoy the ordinary.

finding clouds in our deep unfolding

I step outside into a bracing morning. The day is almost too blue; the air is so clear that is seems alive. Far above me, the clouds march in celestial cadence across the sky. Years ago I used to drive a cab for a living. There was a blind woman I used to pick up. She was taciturn, proper, almost British in her sense of propriety and reserve. And though she seldom talked, we gradually became friends. One day I asked her what one thing she would wish to see if, for only one minute, she could have the gift of sight. She smiled and thought a moment. Then, she said, ‘Clouds.’ The answer surprised me. ‘Why clouds?’ I asked. ‘Because I can’t imagine them,’ she…

Wild Geese

I want to let my imagination seek out the world I live in and my place in it. Mary Oliver shared  the wonderful idea that we are but one in the greater world we live in. Take care and enjoy a wonderful Sabbath.

You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
For a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting —
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.

Reflections

This is a beautiful way to begin the day. It reminded me of the Parker Palmer quote: “Ask who the person is that teaches.” Who am I? What do I stand for? What do I hold as my truth? These are the guideposts of life from moment to moment. Be present.

Thresholds

When change comes, it is hard to recognize it as opportunity. I know change is a fixture along with death and taxes. I know that, but it does not always make it easier. It takes trust in others who journey with me. Their eyes see what mine do not. Sometimes I want to jump hastily, at the wrong time. I hit a closed door, not yet opened Other times, I linger and the door swings shut. This time, I know it is right. I ready to embark and cross this new threshold. This is a point of entry, one of many. Be mindful as you cross this one and many others.

I feel a weight gone and creativity surging back to the fore.

I stand transfixed,

Not knowing what I see

It is unfamiliar

Troubled–

I see no adventure.

I feel your hand,

A gentle touch on my shoulder

It guides me forward,

My heart opens and listens–

A gentle voice softly speaks:

“Fear not.”

Urged on,

Invited in,

Welcome there,

I cross a new threshold

I am not alone;

You are with me.

Your happiness doesn’t depend on anyone or anything… It’s up to you. And there is something you can do about it!

This is a great quote from Helen Keller. It is the uncommon common sense approach to life I find missing in over planned bureaucratic and technocratic settings. We need to be patient and see with new, fresh eyes. What did I miss? The more we try control the less we control.

.

When you look deeply into the nature of this thing called life and begin to understand what life is and the way the mind works, you will come to realize that in fact your happiness does not depend on any outside circumstances, events or people. This is the core realization. This is the heart of this understanding. When things begin to fall apart and then you begin to see what’s really going on, you will discover that the happiness you seek is an internal event, an internal experience. And that this internal experience has nothing to do with all the things you were programmed to believe your happiness depended on! And this is why I say this is the good news… because it means you’re free! You are free! Your happiness doesn’t depend on anyone or anything… It’s up to you. And there is something you can do about it!

A MASTERS MESSAGE FOR TODAY

This is a beautiful quote to begin the day. In a world consumed by materialism, we need less activism, change for the sake of change, busyness, and intolerance. We need to see each other as human beings and not human doings.
