The Rules for Being Human

This showed up today. It is true, old, and universal.

About ivonprefontaine

In keeping with bell hooks and Noam Chomsky, I consider myself a public and dissident intellectual. Part of my work is to move beyond (transcend) institutional dogmas that bind me to defend freedom, raising my voice to be heard on behalf of those who seek equity and justice in all their forms. I completed my PhD in Philosophy of Leadership Studies at Gonzaga University, Spokane, WA. My dissertation and research was how teachers experience becoming teachers and their role as leaders. I focus on leading, communicating, and innovating in organizations. This includes mindfuful servant-leadership, World Cafe events, Appreciative Inquiry, and expressing one's self through creativity. I offer retreats, workshops, and presentations that can be tailored to your organzations specific needs. I published peer reviewed articles about schools as learning organizations, currere as an ethical pursuit, and hope as an essential element of adult eductaion. I published three poems and am currently preparing my poetry to publish as an anthology of poetry. I present on mindful leadership, servant leadership, schools as learning organizations, how teachers experience becoming teachers, assessement, and critical thinking. I facilitate mindfulness, hospitality retreats. and World Cafe Events using Appreciative Inquiry. I am writing and researching about various forms of leadership, how teachers inform and form their identity as a particular teacher, schools as learning organizations, hope and its anticipatory relationship with the future, and hope as an essential element in learning.

  1. This is a beautiful set of rules, and well worth some study. I find it hard to believe that it is as old as it is claimed to be, but that doesn’t make it any less valuable.

  6. Kind of like the theme of 21 st century learning: learn from others, learning anywhere anytime, you are in control of your own learning, what you make of life is up to you…
We have a variety of different tools to use to learn these lessons today. Enjoying your blog. You are great with words and images.

  7. Many versions of this float around the web and still inspire. I believe the original is from Dr. Cherie Carter-Scott, author of If Life Is a Game, These Are the Rules.

  8. This is wonderful advice. Hard sometimes to keep in mind – especially rule number 7. I’m having some personal problems with one of my dearest friends right now, and it’s important (but hard!) to remember that it’s not all one person’s fault or the other.

  12. Not really rules are they? More like a blueprint to being the light we already are…

  13. They are good teachings. Where do the rules quote from? If you don’t mind, I want to know it. It is written that it is from ancient Sanskrit.

    Reply
    • They are attributed to Dr. Cherie Carter-Scott, author of If Life Is a Game, These Are the Rules. But, someone else said they do come from ancient Sanskrit. I suspect they have been around in some form for a long time and Dr. Carter-Scott wrote her book around them from a contemporary perspective.

This is THE best post I have read, ever. Is it truly from ancient sanskrit though? How curious!

    Love no. 3 – ‘trail & error’ 🙂

It simplifies things, really causes you to pause on what is life. It is so true life is what you make it – but truly, do we ALL have the resources we need? There are schizophrenics (like my sister), retarded people… just not sure on that bit. Yet, I love this totally. EXCELLENT 🙂

    • It is a truly lovely piece. I am not sure of its origins but have been led to believe it has been around for a long time. More recently, it has been attributed to Dr. Cherie Carter-Scott, author of If Life Is a Game, These Are the Rules.

You are probably right that we do not all have the resources to operate, but for the vast majority if we paused and thought about life these would be wonderful guides.

It is easily the most popular post. People seem to find even after five months. I posted it on June 29, 2012.

  35. Great post! It parallels my own personal beliefs exactly. Over the years, I’ve been taken by surprise more than once when various situations have arisen in which I am forced to take a step back, reflect carefully, and then recognize and accept the lesson being offered to me. In the end, the result has always been worth the effort. Have a nice evening and a wonderful weekend, and thank you for checking out my blog and choosing to follow my rantings and ravings. 😀

  57. Very cool poster! Now that is ONE I would like to see hung in each and every classroom! Instead of the $10,000 posters illustrating COMPETENCY STANDARDS that were TOTALLY not kid friendly…much less human friendly! (I was burdened with those Laminated Posters for my last 4 years of teaching in the public school).
