The Poet Dreams of the Mountain

Kathy and I were in Cuba for a week. I think I am back on track with the blog. As well, I submitted a draft of my dissertation to the committee and am waiting to hear back from them.

It was nice to go and just be for a few days. Sometimes, we need to just look back and contemplate, without anything other than being present and in the moment. I think that is what Mary Oliver is getting at in this poem. I found that reading, writing, re-reading, and re-writing consumed my days.

For few days, I found there was no urgency. It was peaceful to walk on the beach, watching pelicans dive bomb into the surf. It was inspiring to look up at night and see the heavens filled with stars, only occasionally disrupted by a distant light house beacon. It was enjoyable to be behind an ox and plow for a few minutes. When I rode a horse, I remembered days past. We need to unsmother those moments, those days and experiences so our dreams come back to us and breathe life into our souls.

Sometimes I grow weary of the days, with all their fits and starts.
I want to climb some old gray mountains, slowly, taking
The rest of my lifetime to do it, resting often, sleeping
Under the pines or, above them, on the unclothed rocks.
I want to see how many stars are still in the sky
That we have smothered for years now, a century at least.
I want to look back at everything, forgiving it all,
And peaceful, knowing the last thing there is to know.
All that urgency! Not what the earth is about!
How silent the trees, their poetry being of themselves only.
I want to take slow steps, and think appropriate thoughts.
In ten thousand years, maybe, a piece of the mountain will fall.

I focus on leading, communicating, and innovating in organizations. This includes mindfuful servant-leadership, World Cafe events, Appreciative Inquiry, and expressing one's self through creativity. I offer retreats, workshops, and presentations that can be tailored to your organzations specific needs. I published peer reviewed articles about schools as learning organizations, currere as an ethical pursuit, and hope as an essential element of adult eductaion. I published three poems and am currently preparing my poetry to publish as an anthology of poetry. I present on mindful leadership, servant leadership, schools as learning organizations, how teachers experience becoming teachers, assessement, and critical thinking. I’m sorry but the true is transparent and not incomplete.

      • I agree there are many sides to the story of Cuba. We saw some of the that while we were there. At the resort, it is modern. On the farms and highways, it is quite traditional. As well, there is poverty that is not well hidden.

  5. Being in the NOW, allowing ourselves to look and simply BE. And because it’s a choice, rather than a given, like breathing, we too often omit to do it, but it’s just as important to our well being. Glad you had a good break, and hope all goes well with the dissertation.

  6. So interesting you speak of travel (Cuba), academic pursuits (dissertation) and follow it with this M.O. poem about simply Living, Being. It’s the human paradox/quandary, if we are attentive, I think. Aloha, Ivon! Good luck with the dissertation 😉

  7. I remember the horses. Those moments of two beings moving as one. The feel of her strong heck as I caressed her. Her beautiful mane. Her strength and her calmness. I loved the horses. Each and every one. I kissed their soft noses and the world fell away as they pulled me into their world. Unfortunately, I couldn’t stay there. Humans aren’t allowed to live in their world. We aren’t as pure and shiny as they are and even the best of us destroys beauty. I gave them my heart and they let me. I was young and they took that into consideration. Thank you for reminding me.

  11. Taking a break is vital to our existence. I’m glad you got away and went to Cuba! Very interesting place. Lots of contrasts, but the Cubans are very ingenious people.

Your dissertation sounds interesting. I am a retired teacher and learned a lot about myself while in that profession, both good and bad! Teaching was definitely the most challenging thing I did in my lifetime. But now I’m retired, so I have time for all those things I never had time for when teaching! And taking time for traveling is, to me, vital to my well-being!

    • I agree with the many contrasts in Cuba. As I watched the people in old cars, their bicycle cabs, and horse drawn cabs, the words that popped into my mind were resilient and innovative and ingenious fits. The dissertation has been enjoyable. Teaching is challenging, but with great challenges come great rewards.
