Kathy and I were blessed with our first grandchild in April, 2014. He is beginning to walk and his reach in the world is growing.
Similar to Mimi, new questions arise as we enter into a relationship like grandparents. We become elders and see the world through a new lens. When I spend time with our grandson, I do not feel rushed like I did at times when I was a parent with young children. I enjoy his laughter, when he plays with the little boy in the mirror, and as he snuggles and falls asleep in my arms.
I wish for a better world for all our grandchildren and children. One where we see each other in our human being and human becoming.

In keeping with bell hooks and Noam Chomsky, I consider myself a public and dissident intellectual. Part of my work is to move beyond (transcend) institutional dogmas that bind me to defend freedom, raising my voice to be heard on behalf of those who seek equity and justice in all their forms.
I completed my PhD in Philosophy of Leadership Studies at Gonzaga University, Spokane, WA. My dissertation and research was how teachers experience becoming teachers and their role as leaders.

I offer retreats, workshops, and presentations that can be tailored to your organzations specific needs.
I published peer reviewed articles about schools as learning organizations, currere as an ethical pursuit, and hope as an essential element of adult eductaion. I published three poems and am currently preparing my poetry to publish as an anthology of poetry.
I present on mindful leadership, servant leadership, schools as learning organizations, how teachers experience becoming teachers, assessement, and critical thinking. I facilitate mindfulness, hospitality retreats. and World Cafe Events using Appreciative Inquiry.
I am writing and researching about various forms of leadership, how teachers inform and form their identity as a particular teacher, schools as learning organizations, hope and its anticipatory relationship with the future, and hope as an essential element in learning.

Nice to hear about grandchild, I have a 14 month old grandson. Micah is the light and life of our lives, although it sounds cliche, it isn’t. We can hope that parents are conscious enough to raise this generation well, despite the world around them, and as part of it. Sheila

It only sounds like a cliche to those who have not experienced it yet. Children are a reason to get up in the morning and do the best we can in the world.
Being a grandparent, not only is a great blessing it is a tremendous investment in the future. Enjoy your children and your grandchildren.

My dad had less time with me than he’s with my son and his grandchildren. He had more time with my youngest brother too. And now I find myself with little time for my own son but maybe one day his children will have more of me.
I think as we become elders we can slow down and savor the moments. I realize the importance in that slowing down. Richard Rohr speaks about learning that in the first half of our lives.

I do too. She does not post as often, but, perhaps, that is what makes the messages more meaningful.
It’s wonderful to watch, from a less stressed view point now, the tremendous curiosity and joy of discovery in our grand kids! Nice to hear you too now have one who can amaze you and Kathy.

It is a challenging part of living. Being mindful is hard work.
We have four grandkids and each of them have brought joy to our lives in new ways different than our own children. It is absolutely great to be a parent and very special to be a grandparent!
Truer words were never spoken Bill. It has been special these last few months and provided new insights into our children.
